I was encouraged by an old high school friend and inspired by my wife and daughters to paint this painting. Capturing the tender, very precious and nowadays becoming somewhat rare moment shared only between a Hmong mother and her daughter(s) in the day of the Hmong New Year celebration.

At the moment our arts, rituals and cultural heritage are at such fragile state, we must take great care of it, otherwise, it may be here today, but gone before we know it.

Recognized by many as a universal symbol for the Hmong. I am simply taking the Qeej to an exciting and new form.

I wanted to create a painting that would exhibit how close netted we (The Hmong) are.

The Hmong people as we know it consists of 18 last names (clans). This painting depicts the intricacy of the core elements that remain deeply woven in the fabric of our people and our community.  A few key words that I've used for inspiration were: Selfless, Supportive, Advancing, United, Oneness and Hmongness.
