"Unity in Diversity"
Dragon Festival Community Art Project
Phalen Lake, Saint Paul, MN
Completion date: July 2007

Title: "Unity in Diversity"

This project was conceived with the profound idea that at one point in our history (as results of recent DNA research) we (all human beings) have come from a single group people or even from a single person. If this is the case, then why are we so fearful of one another? Why are we so divided? Why do we choose to seek and point out the few things that make us different rather than embracing all the things that we have in common?

Our team of 6 Hmong artists spent the entire summer to complete a 12 feet by 20 feet mural capturing scenes of the Hmong migration to the United States.

On the surface, it is about the Hmong, but underneath the surface, it is about all immigrants- our emotions and experiences as we make our way to here.

Each piece of the mural captures: 1. Homeland 2. Reason for leaving our homeland 3. Leaving everything behind 4. The trauma we experienced when we first arrived 5. Rebuilding 6. Contributing
